According to a 2009 article in iThe American Lawyer/i, the nation's 200 highest-grossing law firms devoted a record number of hours to pro bono work in 2008. While several factors have contributed to this increase, the recent recession has caused pro bono work to become an important alternative for many young associates seeking substantive legal work.
