How The Practice Of Law Has Changed In My Lifetime

The Connecticut Law Tribune

November 23, 2009

A few weeks ago, I wrote a column about how the law has changed in the 62 years since I was admitted to the bar - mainly by wall-to-wall statutes supplanting the common law. The practice of law in Connecticut has also changed over that period in ways that young lawyers don't realize. One way is that medical malpractice cases were difficult to bring then because doctors would not testify against other doctors. Another is the number of women practicing today, almost a third of the bar. But there are two particular ways the practice has changed in Connecticut that many old-timers will agree are the most significant.
