Who's Afraid Of Electing Judges?

The emLaw Tribune/em's Advisory Board recently made some good points in calling upon states to abandon the election of judges. The practice does pose a risk of corruption and a threat to judicial independence. A judicial candidate soliciting campaign contributions is itself an unseemly spectacle, but hitting up lawyers for money further serves to undermine public confidence in the integrity of the courts. With that said, let us at least consider the benefits of it and be honest about the faults of the alternatives.
