Judicial Award Raises Ethical Issues
Friday, September 28, 2012 | by Karen Lee Torre | The Connecticut Law Tribune
The Connecticut Women's Education and Legal Fund is about to have its annual dinner, at which it bestows awards on women "who make a difference," that is, those "who are making significant contributions to the advancement of women, girls and their families in Connecticut." That's nice, but CWEALF's decision to bestow an award on Judge Lynda B. Munro raises serious ethical issues.

A Case For Changing Home Invasion Law
Friday, September 21, 2012 | by Karen Lee Torre | The Connecticut Law Tribune
A recently concluded prosecution of three men who broke into a Woodbridge woman's home illustrates a flaw in the state's penal code that should be quickly fixed. In response to the atrocities committed against the Petit family in Cheshire, the legislature enacted a "home invasion" law.

Abusing organizational procedures and employing debate-suppressing maneuvers, the leadership of the Connecticut Bar Association succeeded in getting the CBA to abandon its non-partisan tradition. By a split vote (12-4, with one abstention), the Board of Governors approved a request by a Boston-based gay advocacy group that the CBA officially support plaintiffs challenging the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act.

For 15 years, Emma Jones, greatly assisted by a liberal media that couldn't get enough of her, has made the state's residents, especially those in New Haven County, endure ceaseless attention to her claim that racist policies and practices of the Town of East Haven caused the death of her 21-year old son. In 1997, Malik Jones was fatally shot by a town police officer after he defied orders to pull over his vehicle and led police in a dangerous, high-speed chase into New Haven. The car finally got stuck in a ditch and an officer approached it on foot. Instead of giving up, a PCP-drugged Jones chose to throw his car into reverse, hit the gas, and attempt to run over the officer. It was that choice that cost him his life.

From President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder has come the most phony rhetoric over state voter ID laws and Arizona's new immigration-related law. "Your papers, please," iterated in a sarcastic tone, has become a Democratic party mocking point against Republican-led initiatives to require voters to show proof of identity at the polls, and to require non-citizens to show proof of lawful presence in the United States.

"Honesty is relative." That was the precept I got from a campaign manager when I questioned why he was running a Marxist and communist party activist as an "Independent" candidate for mayor rather than on the communist party line. Why not just be who you are? I asked. He then explained the moral relativism of the left. In their minds, their world view is the truth; its opponents are evil. There is thus nothing wrong with lying if that is what it takes to defeat the evildoers. The ends justify the means.
