Beware Of Elites Bearing Gun Control Theories
Friday, January 18, 2013 | by Karen Lee Torre | The Connecticut Law Tribune
I paraphrase one of Justice Clarence Thomas's best lines, a most devastating rebuke of the largely white liberal/lawyer/judicial class whose pretensions and pontifications about racial preferences conceal what is in actuality soft racism.

No Easy Fixes In Our Rent-A-Gun World
Friday, January 18, 2013 | by Norm Pattis | The Connecticut Law Tribune
Laws banning assault weapons, prohibiting clips capable of carrying dozens of rounds of ammunition and requiring background checks of all gun purchasers will be about as effective in stopping gun violence as selling chastity belts in red-light districts.

I understand that a proposal is on its way to the Rules Committee to allow folks who have invoked the Practice Book procedure which allows lawyers to designate themselves as retired (and, thus avoid the client security fund payment) to still do pro bono activity.

Every day, millions of Americans are pulling up to stop lights, looking over their shoulder towards the car next to them, and seeing a driver unaware of their surroundings.

I have previously criticized the procedure employed by the Editorial Board of the Law Tribune in publishing editorials. There are some level-headed and responsible members on that board, but there are also those (the ones who seem to keep hanging on and never leave) who exploit that to throw darts from behind a veil. When Law Tribune columnists speak out, readers know whose opinion it is. I, Norm Pattis, Dan Krisch and others do not write anonymously or employ pseudonyms. We do not hide behind somebody or something else.

Friday, January 11, 2013 | by Norm Pattis | The Connecticut Law Tribune
I write today to block any effort to nominate Connecticut United States Attorney David Fein for appointment to the federal bench. In his four-year tenure as top federal prosecutor in Connecticut, he has not shown the requisite commitment to fair play and respect for the rule of law necessary to inspire confidence as a federal judge.

I am staring at a blank computer screen with a deadline looming. For the first time in the two years that I have authored this column, I have a crippling case of writer's block. My rule of thumb for each column is that if I can sum up the point I am trying to make in one sentence, it'll be a good column. At the moment, however, my thoughts refuse to cohere themselves into anything resembling a point ? so, in lieu of a traditional column, I (semi-)proudly present Random Thoughts For 2013? (with apologies to Larry King for borrowing his shtick)

I think that Governor Dannel Malloy's nomination of Andrew McDonald to the Supreme Court is great. And I have no doubt that he will be confirmed. Both houses are controlled by Democrats and McDonald, a former state senator, still has lots of friends in the legislature.

Newtown Is The Pretext To Ignore What Counts

Blame the National Rifle Association if you want, as many politicians do, for the wide distribution of guns in the United States. At least blaming the NRA is safer politically than blaming the tens of millions of Americans who own guns legally and responsibly.

In the wake of the Newtown tragedy, many will seek answers and solutions. Unfortunately, they will be joined by the predictable rabble of attention getters, including some members of our profession, who will use this chance to promote themselves, "calling for" this or that, but really only trolling for clients and promoting their businesses. We all know who they are.
