Family law is an entire different entity. They have their own rules, biases, corruptions, and serious misguiding‘s on the latest Evidence Based practices when it involves abuse by one of the parents who use drugs and/or alcohol and abuses the child/children and other parent. Attorneys will rarely bring up these issues in a divorce if they believe there is abuse, concerned that the nonabusive parent will be seen as a liar in the eyes of the courts, who still believe the Narcissist as well as that only 2% of women are truly abused still. If they mention abuse the attorney risks placing the child in more danger since the norm of the courts is to place the children back in the hands of the abuser if this is done and shut the nonabuser out of the child‘s/children‘s lives. There are people out there trying to change the laws from "the best interest" test used for years and doesn‘t work to "what is safest for the child" which is based on current evidence, statistics and common sense. The courts don‘t always use common sense and are not obligated to, they are obligated to go by the Constitution and laws. We, as citizens are obligated to get the laws changed to protect the people, especially our children. It‘s not as easy as writing a book, there are many out there. Family courts across the nation have many problems that other courts don‘t and are the last place you want to have to be in if you‘ve been in an abusive marriage with children that also involved alcohol and/or drugs of the other parent. It can be your worse hell on earth and linger on for years. Victims are revictimized. So much more training is need in this area however, these courts are still behind the times and reluctant to any change. They won‘t get it until someone in Congress/Senator etc. has an entire family killed by their abuser violating a protective order and it makes the national headlines. It needs to hit home to open their eyes and create change. Sadly, many more families will be affected because of their lack of education on this subject. This is also a serious concern for children who are sexually assaulted. They are also placed with the abuser by the courts. Most people never realize this since these hearings/trials are not in public settings but done with only in the presence of the parents, attorneys, Judge and court employees present. You can read some old cases though in your State and see the way, to a point, a case is tried. There are many groups out there trying to change the laws, all with people, each having a similar story to tell while living in the Family court system.

I hope Atty. Ruane writes a book on handling alcohol abuse and family law. This is an area that is handled very inconsistently in Family Law and can use some established standards to ensure rights are not being violated in Family Court.
