Laws banning assault weapons, prohibiting clips capable of carrying dozens of rounds of ammunition and requiring background checks of all gun purchasers will be about as effective in stopping gun violence as selling chastity belts in red-light districts.

    Fines could work. But if you really want to kill the fun of gun ownership, require liability insurance! Or malpractice insurance for legal owners. Won't eliminate guns, but will reduce the numbers in lawful homes. Then killers could be prosecuted for failure to have requried gun insurance. That would teach them.
