Martin's Lawyer To Speak In Norwalk
A young lawyer who helped Trayvon Martin's family after his death will be the keynote speaker at the Norwalk NAACP's Thirteenth Annual Freedom Fund Banquet on September 27.
The theme of the banquet, Building Tomorrow's Leaders, is intended to recognize the role of youth in leadership in today's Civil Rights movement, according to the banquet's organizers.
"We are also marking the 50th Anniversary of the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.," said Jill Griffin, banquet chair. "We are fortunate to be able to welcome attorney Jasmine Rand to help us celebrate our youth, and to give us other vital information."
Rand, who is the head of the Civil Rights Division of the firm Parks & Crump LLC, in Tallahassee, Fla., is expected to speak about the Martin shooting case and the subsequent trial, in which George Zimmerman was acquitted of the killing of the African-American teen, said Griffin. "She is probably going to touch on [challenges for young people] and you can't avoid talking about the Trayvon Martin situation," Griffin said. "[Rand] herself is young and is innovative and we want our youth to see positive role models."
The event will take place on Friday, September 27 at 6 p.m., at The Water's Edge at Giovanni's in Darien. Tickets are $65. A table for 10 is $650. To purchase tickets, e-mail email@example.com. •
